Urchfont Scarecrow Festival

A short STORY FOR CHILDREN

The Scarecrow Who Could Fly

Once upon a time...

... in a lush green field, in a village called Urchfont, stood a scarecrow named Eric.

Unlike the other scarecrows on the farm, Eric wasn't feared by the crows; instead, he was their friend. He would chat with them, sing songs, and even share stories as they fluttered around him.

All the other scarecrows didn't approve of Eric's friendship with the crows. They believed that scarecrows and crows should always be enemies. So, they wouldn't be Eric's friend and refused to talk to him.

Despite feeling lonely at times, Eric remained true to himself and continued to be friends with the crows. He believed in kindness and acceptance, even if others didn't understand.

One day, as Eric was standing in the field, he noticed the crows gathering around him with excitement. They had a surprise for him. The crows had collected colourful balloons from a nearby festival and begun to tie them to Eric's arm.

"Eric, with these balloons, you can fly with us!" exclaimed one of the crows.

Eric gasped in amazement. He had always dreamt of flying, but as a scarecrow, he never thought it was possible. With the balloons lifting him gently off the ground, Eric soared into the sky, surrounded by his feathered friends.

As they flew higher and higher, Eric's heart filled with joy. He looked down at the fields below, seeing everything from a new perspective. The wind whistled through his straw and the sun warmed his raggedy old clothes.

The children at the festival looked up, pointed and cheered as they saw their balloons soaring with Eric and the crows. They clapped and laughed, delighted to see where their balloons had gone.

From that day on, Eric famously became known as 'The Scarecrow Who Could Fly.' His friendship with the crows brought happiness not only to him but also to the other scarecrows, who finally realised that differences should be celebrated, not shunned.

And so, in the green fields, Eric continued to soar with his friends, teaching everyone that with kindness and acceptance, anything is possible.

The End.

Well, almost...

If you look up into the sky on starry nights, you may just be lucky enough to see Eric and his scarecrow friends holding tightly onto their balloons as they fly across the moonlit sky. Make sure you give them a wave.
